Autism and Travel Insurance
Autism
I just have travelled to Indonesia for work so that as a part of my preparation … and because I like to prepare yourself I wanted to organise Holiday insurance. This is my first overseas trip for work since the kids had been clinically determined to have Autism. They weren’t travelling with me at night … however guess I'd it in the rear of my mind after i was organising my holiday insurance.
Autism
I'd thought obtaining the holiday insurance ought to be easy enough … I possibly could not believe how wrong I used to be. Things i discovered very quicly that although it might seem that there are A huge number of different travel insurance policies available .. well really that isn't true. In fact there are really on a few business that provide holiday insurance and underwrite for other businesses (more and more often than not just copy the PDS from the underwritter). And lots of of which aren’t really fans of people with Autism … well at least their polices aren’t
So how exactly does having a child with Autism that is not travelling impact what you can do to obtain travel insurance?
I know this might seem to be a little confusing and never make many sense … but this is how it really works. Based on all the insurance providers I spoke to Autism will be counted like a “Pre-existing Medical Condition”. Pre-existing Medical Conditions of not merely the travelling party, but travelling companions and non-travelling relatives have to be considered when getting travel insurance.
Why would that make a difference? Well if you need to cancel your journey and be repatriated quickly due to something which pertains to a Pre-existing Health conditions that could be very expensive. For this reason you receive holiday insurance. But wait, how can Autism be viewed being a potential cause a claim on travel insurance. Well after i was conversing with the insurance coverage companies I got different responses to that they would consider the following.
Senario - Your son or daughter ends onto the road and gets stepped on by way of a car. They're hurt badly and also you must go back home.
Response - All insurance comapnies declared they might pay for repatriation.
Senario Expanded - When i asked if this could this modification if it was known how the child had autism which one of many areas of their condition was they had a desire for cars coupled with a broad lack of knowledge of road safety.
Response - Mixed. Some asserted they might pay, some not sure … a few said definitely not.
IMHO holiday insurance information mill unfairly (and that i wonder if illegally) discriminating against people who have non-travelling relatives with Autism. Many don’t or won’t provide coverage for autism and potentially will twist items to extend unreasonably the effect on autism to cover well virtually anything. Case wrong.
